પ્લાયવૂડ શું છે?

સુંવાળી સપાટીવાળું પ્લાયવૂડનું પાટિયું ફર્નિચર ઉપરાંત ઘણાં બધા ઉપયોગમાં આવે છે. પ્લાયવૂડ લાકડામાંથી જ બને છે. પ્લાય એટલે પડ અને વૂડ એટલે લાકડું. આમ તેના નામ ઉપરથી જ ખયાલ આવી જાય કે પ્લાયવૂડ લાકડાના પાતળાં પડ જોડીને બનાવેલું હોય છે. તમે તૂટેલા પ્લાયવુડનું અવકોલન કરશો તો આ પડ જુદા દેખાઈ આવશે. પ્લાયવૂડનાં પાટિયાં પાતળાં હોવા છતાંય મજબૂત હોય તેનું કરાણ તેના પડની ગોઠવણી છે. પ્લાયવૂડ બનાવવા માટે વૃક્ષના થડ ઉપરથી છાલ ઉતારી તેને વધુ લીસું બનાવાય છે. આ માટે તેને ગરમ પાણીમાં ડૂબાડી રખાય છે ત્યારબાદ નરમ બને ત્યારે યાંત્રિક રીતે વધુ છોલીને બિલકુલ સુંવાળું બનાવાય છે. પછી તેમાં કાપકૂપ કરી પાતળા પાટિયા તૈયાર થાય છે. આ પાટિયાને વિનિયર કહે છે. આવા ત્રણ પાટિયાને એડેસિવ વડે એકબીજા સાથે ચિપકાવી દેવાય છે. લાકડાના પાટિયા લાકડાના ઊભા રેસાના બનેલાં હોય છે. પ્લાયવૂડનું વચ્ચેનું પડ આસપાસના પડના રેસા સાથે કાટખૂણો બનાવે તે રીતે મૂકાય છે. એટલે રેસા ક્રોસ થાય છે અને પાટિયું ચિરાતું કે તૂટતું નથી. કેટલાંક મજબૂત પ્લાયવૂડ પાંચ કે વધુ પડના બનેલાં હોય છે. લાકડાનું સાદું પાટિયું ચીરાઈ જાય છે. ગરમી ઠંડીથી મરડાઈ જાય છે પરંતુ પ્લાયવૂડ આ સંજોગોમાં સલામત રહે છે.

ગ્રીનહાઉસ શું છે?

પૃથ્વી પરના સજીવો અને વનસ્પતિના વિકાસ માટે હૂંફાળું વાતાવરણ જોઈએ. ઠંડા પ્રદેશોમાં હૂંફ જાળવી રાખવા કાચની દીવાલોવાળા મોટા ઓરડા બનાવી તેમાં પાક વાવવાની પધ્ધતિ અપનાવાય છે. કાચ દ્વારા સૂર્યપ્રકાશ અંદર પ્રવેશે પરંતુ તેની ગરમી બહાર વહી જાય નહીં તેવો હેતુ હોય છે. આ કાચઘરને ગ્રીનહાઉસ કહે છે.
પૃથ્વીની આસપાસ  કેટલાક વાયુઓનું પડ પણ કાચ જેવું કામ કરે છે. કાર્બન ડાયોક્સાઈડ, ઓઝોન, મિથેન અને ક્લોરો ફ્લોરો કાર્બન જેવા વાયુઓ હવાથી હળવા હોવાના કારણે આકાશમાં ચોક્કસ ઊંચાઈએ રહી એક આવરણ બનાવે છે. આ આવરણ સૂર્યપ્રકાશને પૃથ્વી સુધી આવવા દે છે પરંતુ સૂર્ય પ્રકાશની ગરમીને બહાર જવા દેતું નથી. આ વાયુઓ ન હોય તો પૃથ્વી થીજી જાય. પૃથ્વી પર ગરમી રહે જ નહીં. આ અસરને ગ્રીન હાઉસ ઈફેક્ટ કહે છે.
એક બીજી વાત પણ છે. આ વાયુઓ વધી જાય તો શું થાય? પૃથ્વી ઉપર વધુ પડતી ગરમી એક્ઠી થઈ જાય અને નુકશાન થાય. આ બધા ગ્રીનહાઉસ ગેસ છે તેનું યોગ્ય પ્રમાણ જળવાય તો જ તેને લાભ મળે. પૃથ્વી પર ઉદ્યોગો અને વાહન વ્યવહારના ધૂમાડાથી આ વાયુઓને પ્રમાણ વધી રહ્યું છે એ પર્યાવરણ માટે ચિંતાનો વિષય છે.
